Brief History of Kano Traders Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd.

KTMCS was established in 1986 as a capital sharing scheme and also the mouthpiece of small traders in Kano state. It boasted about 2,000 members and share capital of N4,600,000 equivalent to $460,000 then, which was used for a variety of schemes ranging investment from import-export, joint ventures with members, commodities trading, investment in privatized companies and establishment of small-scale industries. During that period Six full-time staff including a director, an accountant and a pharmacist( to organize a pharmaceutical company) were employed.

In 1990, it was able to pay out N800,000 equivalent $100,000 in dividends, and in 1991 N1,270,000 equvalent to $127,000 was paid out to members. KTMCS enjoyed support of the wealthiest Kano entrepreneurs, as part of its actvities it was able to submit recommendations to Kano state government concerning fires in Sabon Gari Market, and secured stalls for several hundred of traders.
